Menopause & the Boss Life: What Women Need to Know

Updated: Jun 17

Let’s be real—menopause is one of those topics folks don’t always talk about, especially in business spaces. But if you’re a woman navigating entrepreneurship, you already know: this phase of life can hit different.

It’s not just about hot flashes and night sweats. Menopause can shift your mindset, throw off your routine, and challenge your energy in ways that impact your well-being, relationships, and your ability to show up for your business.

And for Us women? Add the pressure of being the backbone, the builder, the fixer—we’re often juggling everything while trying to make power moves. So yeah, it deserves more attention.

Breaking Down Menopause—No Filter

Menopause usually kicks in between 45 and 55. It’s when your period stops, fertility ends, and your hormones start doing the most. That can bring on:

  • Hot flashes

  • Mood swings

  • Brain fog

  • Anxiety

  • Sleep issues

About 75% of women feel those hot flashes. Half report mood or anxiety struggles. So if you’ve been feeling off lately, you’re not imagining it. And when you’re running a business, that’s a lot to carry.

When the Grind Meets the Change

Entrepreneurship takes clarity, confidence, and energy—all things menopause can throw off. You might start forgetting things, second-guessing decisions, or feeling too drained to push forward. That doesn’t mean you’re not capable—it just means your body’s in transition.

A UK study found nearly 1 in 3 women considered stepping away from work because of menopause symptoms. And in business? That kind of stress can lead to burnout fast—especially when you’re trying to wear all the hats.

Mental Health Is Part of the Hustle

Don’t sleep on how menopause affects your mental health. Depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem are real and valid. One study showed women dealing with depressive symptoms during menopause were 34% less likely to chase entrepreneurial goals.

That’s why protecting your peace is key. Whether it’s therapy, journaling, walking, prayer, or just setting better boundaries—your mind needs as much care as your brand.

Find Your Support System

You don’t have to go through this alone. Whether it’s a sister circle, a business coach, or a healthcare provider, lean into people who get it.

Joining groups like the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) or local entrepreneur networks such as House of Peach can help you connect with others facing similar challenges. There's strength in community.

Give Yourself Permission to Flex

One of the best parts of being your own boss? You call the shots. You can build a business that honors your health.

Flexible hours, remote workdays, shifting deadlines—those aren’t weaknesses, they’re smart strategies. A Harvard Business Review study found women entrepreneurs who prioritized flexibility saw a 35% bump in productivity. Your workflow should fit your wellness, not the other way around.

Talk About It, Teach About It

We need to normalize menopause in business conversations. That includes workshops, networking events, and even coaching spaces. If we can talk funding and marketing, we can talk hormones and hot flashes, too.

The more we share, the more we support the next generation of women leaders. We’re creating space for them to lead without shame, fear, or silence.

We Deserve Better Systems

Let’s be honest: most workplaces and business programs aren’t built with menopause in mind. We need policy changes—in healthcare, in funding systems, and in how we talk about women’s health in entrepreneurship.

Companies that support women over 40 with clear policies saw 25% higher retention. That’s proof that support makes a difference. Imagine what that could mean for women building empires of their own.

Quick Reminders for the Journey

Know what’s happening in your body—talk to your doctor early

Protect your peace—mental health matters

Build a circle—connect with mentors and like-minded women

Use your voice—advocate for better support in business spaces

Stay informed—keep learning and evolving

Menopause Ain’t the End—It’s a Shift

Menopause doesn’t mean you’re slowing down—it means you’re shifting gears. You’re entering a new season, and with the right tools, support, and mindset, you can still lead, create, and thrive.

Let’s stop whispering and start uplifting each other through this phase. We’ve always been resilient—and we’re not stopping now.
